About The ESU
The English-Speaking Union (ESU) is an educational and cultural not-for-profit organisation that was founded in London, U.K. in 1918 by Sir Evelyn Wrench. One of the very first Chairmen of the ESU was Sir Winston Churchill
The ESU has established a presence in over 60 countries within the global village. The international headquarters of the ESU are sited at Dartmouth House, London, U.K. HM the Queen is the Patron of the ESU whilst HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, KG KT, is the President.
In Mauritius, the ESU was established in 1993 by the late Sir Rabindrah Ghurburrun. Kt., Q.C., G.O.S.K,as the first Patron and who has remained our Patron until his demise in 2008.
Sir Victor Glover, Kt, GOSK, has been the President of the ESU since its inception until 2008 when he became our Patron. Ms Sharmilla Bhima currently presides the ESU in Mauritius, with Messrs Mohamad A. Vayid, GOSK,CMG, Professor Jagadish Manrakhan, GOSK and Prem Burton as Vice-Presidents.
The mission of the ESU is “Creating Global understanding through English” and the promotion of human achievement.
To-date, the ESU has pursued its aim through the following activities:
- Educational programmes that foster the enjoyment and constructive use of English;
- National and International Youth exchange and by providing a forum for its enhancement;
- International conferences, seminars and meetings that focus on topical affairs and issues; and
- Cultural activities.
