Vice-President
Mr A. Prem Burton is one of the Vice-Presidents of the English Speaking Union, Mauritius.
Mr Burton has a very long career in the Education sector. After completing his B.A (Hons) in English from the University of Bombay, he obtained a diploma in the teaching of English from the University of Leeds. He subsequently followed several courses, amongst which the “Corporate Management in Education” and “Educational Administration” from the Universities of Leeds and Birmingham respectively. He also participated in a number of workshops and seminars in the field of Education and Management, both locally and overseas. In 1996, he participated in the “International Summer Conference” organized by the ESU at Oriel College, Oxford and the following year, he attended the ESU International Council Meeting in Karachi, Pakistan.
Mr Burton started his career in 1961 as an Education Officer and was promoted to Senior Education Officer and later to Principal Education Officer. From 1976 to 1998, Mr Burton was the Director of the Private Secondary Schools Authority (PSSA) which is a parastatal body under the aegis of the Ministry of Education. In 1999, as a new challenge, he became the General Manager of “Les Editions de l’Océan Indien”, one of the leading importers and distributors of books in Mauritius, with over 70 re-selling points in the islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues.
Mr Burton is now retired but he remains very much involved in the activities of the English-Speaking Union and in the Education sector in Mauritius.
